25 February 1994 | Council of Australian Governments agrees to accelerate microeconomic reform, endorsing the Hilmer Report principles |
19 August 1994 | Council of Australian Governments commits to introduce a range of national competition policy reforms and new institutional arrangements |
11 April 1995 | Council of Australian Governments signs the three intergovernmental agreements that create the National Competition Policy |
6 November 1995 | National Competition Council, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and Australian Competition Tribunal created |
1997 | National Competition Council assessment report (first tranche) is released |
1999 | National Competition Council assessment report (second tranche) is released |
3 November 2000 | Council of Australian Governments agreed to extend the timeframe for completing the National Competition Policy program, and that the National Competition Council should undertake annual assessments of implementation progress |
2001 | National Competition Council's 2001 assessment report (third tranche) is released |
2002 | National Competition Council's 2002 assessment report (fourth tranche) is released |
2003 | National Competition Council's 2003 assessment report (fifth tranche) is released |
25 June 2004 | Council of Australian Governments Agreement on a National Water Initiative transferred the 2005 National Competition Policy assessment of progress with water reform to the new National Water Commission |

3 June 2005 | Council of Australian Governments agreed to a new reform agenda |
October 2005 | The National Competition Council provided its final National Competition Policy assessment to the Australian Treasurer. This assessment contained a snapshot of outcomes from the National Competition Policy program over the period 1995-2005 and final payments recommendations. |
10 February 2006 | Council of Australian Governments agreed to the National Reform Agenda and supporting institutional arrangements. The objective of the National Reform Agenda is to enhance Australia's human capital and to continue competition reform and regulatory reform. |
April 2006 | The National Water Commission provided the 2005 National Competition Policy assessment of progress with water reform. |
13 April 2007 | Competition Principles Agreement amended by the Council of Australian Governments |
